This short film, made during the pandemic, collages several modes of visual and material inquiry of balloons: the loss and encapsulation of breath, movement and stillness, a handmade solar balloon, knitted objects mimicking the balloon’s form, and vinyl balloons encountered in daily life. The hope of collective care for each other during COVID was swiftly eclipsed with a sort of great forgetting. Monument attempts to vacillate between that mass forgetting and brief remembering.
